Who is RepYourBlockCuyahoga?
We are a community-led campaign dedicated to helping Cuyahoga County Democrats participate in local politics by running for the Central Committee of the County Democratic Party. We think that getting more people active in Democratic politics will change the way politics work in our county.
Four years ago we organized as Build Back Cuyahoga to encourage progressive Democrats from across the county to run for the Democratic Party’s Central Committee; we identified more than 160 people to run. Following the election of the new Central Committee in May 2022, we contacted all newly elected members, encouraging them to vote for David Brock for Democratic Party chair. Our efforts succeeded in installing a progressive chair who would focus on building the party.
We have reactivated our efforts this year as RepYourBlockCuyahoga to build on the progress that David Brock has initiated on behalf of the party. Under Dave's leadership, thirteen new Democratic Ward Clubs have been created, three new caucuses have formed, eight director positions with specific work portfolios have been established, and a weekly newsletter has been launched. This new party infrastructure has assisted Democrats in gaining control in six suburban city councils, flipping two seats on the Cuyahoga County Council, doubling the number of black judges in the Court of Common Pleas, and leading the state in top percentages and vote totals against the first Issue 1 (more restrictions on citizen led initiatives) in August 2023 and in support of the second Issue 1 (the abortion amendment) in November 2023, both critical to defending reproductive rights in our state. Our Vision for the Democratic Party
From the grassroots, we are building a Democratic Party that:
Is up for the fights against rightwing authoritarianism from Trump to Republicans in Columbus;
Focuses resources on beating Republicans at the ballot box;
Puts the power back in voters’ hands by eliminating divisive practices such as primary endorsements, elected officials acting as official Ward/City leaders, and the influx of reactionary PAC influence.
